House Debates Welfare Reform Reauthorization

Washington, D.C.- Today, the House of Representatives is expected to debate the Personal Responsibility, Work, and Family Promotion Act, which amends and reauthorizes the 1996 Welfare Reform Law. Congressman Todd Akin intends to vote in favor of the bill. Akin released the following statement:

“The 1996 welfare reform act is one of the most important achievements of Congress. The bill that we will reauthorize maintains a safety net for those that need it, while encouraging those who are able to help themselves break the cycle of poverty and government dependence.

“Since its passage, child poverty has fallen, more parents are working and fewer Americans are dependent on welfare.

“Through encouraging work and personal responsibility, welfare reform has and will continue to help restore the American Dream.”
