Akin Joins Press Conference Advocating Balanced Budget
As the Senate rejects economic stimulus package President’s budget falls within a $3 billion of being balanced
Washington, D.C.- Congressman Todd Akin will join with other House members supporting a balanced budget for Fiscal Year 2003. The press will be in the House Radio TV Gallery at 11 A.M. EST.
The President’s budget proposes a deficit of $80 billion with $77 billion of that deficit as a result of enacting an economic stimulus bill. If the Senate fails to pass the economic stimulus bill, and the $77 billion is not recommitted, the Presidents budget proposes only a $3 billion dollar deficit that could be off-set by a one-tenth of one percent of total federal spending.
Congressman Akin released the following statement regarding a balance budget resolution:
“The economic stimulus package is designed to bolster the economy and to create jobs. If the Senate leadership kills this important measure the $77 billion price tag must be used to balance the budget, not on further government spending. ,br>“Our nation is at war and in a recession but we should not abandon fiscal responsibility.
“If Senator Daschle walks away from the economic stimulus bill we must return to a balanced budget.”
