House Passes Defense Authorization Conference Report
The act supports the quality of life, readiness and modernization needs of America’s military
Washington, D.C.- Today, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the FY02 National Defense Authorization Act conference report. The report authorizes $343 billion to meet U.S. defense needs, the most significant defense budget increase since the mid-1980s.
The conference report supports increased funding for readiness nearly $10 billion over the fiscal year 2001 level. The report also supports increased funding for research and development programs $6.8 billion over FY 2001 levels.
“The brave American men and women who defend our country deserve the best equipment and capabilities that modern technology can provide,” said Akin. “With our armed services now fighting terrorists in Afghanistan, it is apparent how crucial a modern and well-equipped fighting force is.”
The conference report supports the President’s budget request for $5.6 billion for DOD efforts to combat terrorism. The report also includes more than $400 million to reduce the threat posed by chemical, biological and nuclear weapons in states of the former Soviet Union.
The report provides the largest military pay raise since 1982.
The report also includes approximately $6 billion for 48 F/A-18E/F Super Hornets, the Navy’s next-generation fighter, and 15 Air Force C-17 transports, which will improve our military’s strategic mobility.
