Bond and Akin Announce $4 Million in Funding for I-44 Fenton Corridor Improvements
The project will help reduce congestion, improve safety and spur economic development
St. Louis, Mo.- Today, Senator Kit Bond and Congressman Todd Akin will announce the appropriation of $4 million by Congress to improve the I-44 Fenton Corridor at a joint press conference in the Fenton City Hall at 1:45 p.m. The money will be used to fund the first phase of a multi-year/appropriation project to help traffic flow, reduce accidents and improve air quality along I-44 from the Meramec River to Bowles Avenue. The money was included in the Transportation Appropriations Conference Report passed by Congress and signed by the president.
The improvements will improve access to and from I-44 immediately west of the Meramec River, add new access ramps near the Daimler-Chrysler plant and improve traffic flow at Bowles and I-44.
There have been over 800 accidents reported in this corridor in the past four years. The accident rate is 49% above the regional average.
“Senator Bond’s work in securing funding for this project has helped in bringing this important project closer to fruition,” said Congressman Todd Akin. “This is a great first step in upgrading traffic flow, reducing congestion and increasing safety along the corridor.”
“Improvements to the I-44 corridor has been one of my priorities and is key for economic development in the area,” stated Akin. “Over 10,000 people are employed within this highway corridor and is home to major national and international corporations.”
