Congress Passes Airline Security Bill
Rep. Akin supports Compromise Version
Washington, D.C.- Today, Congress passed the Aviation and Transportation Security Act of 2001. The bill strikes a compromise by federalizing many of the airport security screeners but includes the provisions of the House version of the bill that were not in the Senate version. Akin voted for the compromise bill and the earlier house version.
“This compromise provides a much more comprehensive security bill than the original Senate version,” said Congressman Akin. “The provisions that all bags be checked and that all screeners have to be U.S. citizens are crucial improvements over the Senate version.”
House provisions included in the compromise bill include:
The conferees have agreed upon the House requirements that screeners be U.S. citizens. The conferees have agreed upon the House requirements that all checked baggage must be screened. The agreement will limit passenger fees by capping the fee to $2.50 and the number of times a passenger can be charged when traveling. The bill also has provisions for bus and rail transportation.
