House Approves Full Funding for Chesterfield-Monarch and Valley Park Levee Projects
(Washington, D.C.) – Today, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the 2002 Energy and Water Development Appropriations Conference Report. The bill included full funding levels for the Chesterfield-Monarch and Valley Park levee projects.
The bill included $1.2 million in construction funds for the Valley Park levee for FY 2002, which is the full amount that the Army Corps. can spend on this project, this fiscal year. When completed, the Valley Park levee will protect the growing city of Valley Park, the elementary school, the high school, highway 141 and numerous businesses.
The bill also provides full funding capability for the Chesterfield-Monarch levee. The $605,000 is for pre-construction design and engineering. The project will improve levee protection in Chesterfield Valley to a 500-year flood level. The area flooded in 1993 causing $420 million in losses.
The levee protects 1-64, Spirit of St. Louis Airports and 330 businesses which employ roughly 6000 people.
“It is imperative that these economically developing areas be protected to the maximum extent possible,” stated Akin. “Given the current budget crunch, I am pleased we were able to secure full funding for these vitally important projects.”
