Statement by Todd Akin on Joint Strike Fighter Contract
St. Louis, Mo- Congressman Todd Akin released the following statement regarding the Department of Defense’s announcement on the Joint Strike Fighter Contract:
“The decision by the Department of Defense to award the Joint Strike Fighter contract to Lockheed Martin is obviously a disappointment, and one with which I disagree.
“In order to preserve a healthy industrial fighter base, common sense dictates that the JSF contract be granted to more than one company. Awarding the contract to a single company risks creating a veritable monopoly in the production of fighter jets. Now that our nation is at war with terrorism, the security and military environment we now find ourselves in makes it even more important to have at least two industrial fighter manufactures.
“Although I am disappointed in the DOD’s decision, it is important to note that work at Boeing’s St. Louis facilities will not be impacted in the short term, and that Boeing has a number of years to assess its options.
“The Super Hornet is expected to be produced by Boeing for at least another decade. Boeing in St. Louis will still produce the AV-8B Harrier, T45 Navy trainer, F15 and C17 subassembly as well as the munitions produced in St. Charles. The citizens of the St. Louis- St. Charles area should be proud of the quality products produced at Boeing and the role those products play in keeping America secure. I anticipate the demand for these and other products will remain strong in the years ahead.”
