House Passes Intelligence Authorization Act
Intelligence bill will bolster efforts in fighting terrorism
Washington, D.C.- Today, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the FY 2002 Defense Authorization Act. The bill funds 12 federal agencies that gather intelligence and fight terrorism including the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), National Security Agency (NSA), the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA), and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
The authorization includes provisions that deal specifically with fighting terrorism, including increasing funding for language training within the intelligence community, rebuilding resources for human intelligence and increased FBI counterterrorism efforts.
“The provisions in this bill will help America to develop a long-term strategy for fighting terrorism,” said Akin. “The bill raises salaries for the intelligence community, increases funding for foreign language training and invests in technologies for the collection of information.”
“The war on terrorism will not be won with military assets alone,” stated Akin. “It will take greater human intelligence in the field and long term strategies to thwart international terrorists.”
