Congressman Akin Votes to Repeal Onerous Ergonomic Rules
(Washington, DC)- Congressman Todd Akin (R-MO), will vote today to repeal over 600 pages of hastily finalized ergonomic regulations. The measure, Senate Joint Resolution 6, was proposed under the Congressional Review Act. The law allows Congress to review and eliminate a regulation up to 60 legislative days after a rule is finalized or printed in the Federal Registry.
“The rules enacted by President Clinton, were rushed through during his final days in office,” said Akin. “They are ambiguous. They would hamstring American businesses, preventing them from being competitive, and pass on great costs to consumers.”
The rules repealed by the Senate Joint Resolution, according to estimates, would cost between $60 billion and $100 billion annually. They are expected to place an inordinate burden on entrepreneurs and small business, and even eliminate some of the jobs the rules were meant to regulate.
“I support workplace safety, but I am for a common-sense approach that does not jeopardize job security or economic growth,” stated Akin. “From a small business and entrepreneurial perspective, the cost and unfairness of these poorly written rules would be ominous,” concluded Akin.
