battlefield experience and her study of Henri Dunant's
writings, she set about to form a Red Cross society in the
United States. In 1881, she succeeded in founding the American
Association of the Red Cross with the first chapter in
Dansville, New York. The following year, Congress ratified the
Geneva Convention, thus giving the Red Cross official
