PROMISES MADE, PROMISES BROKEN
(WASHINGTON, DC) - House Republicans this afternoon prevented Democrats from even offering an amendment to increase funding for medical care for America’s military veterans. House Republican leaders promised in March to increase the funding for vets’ health care by $1.8 billion over the Bush Administration’s budget request. Yet, in the $60 billion 2004 VA Appropriation, there is no such increase. A Democratic amendment to keep the promise was rejected in a vote along
party lines in a full Appropriations Committee hearing on the bill,
and the Republican majority on the House Rules Committee voted not to
allow the Democrats to offer an amendment during debate on the House
floor to increase the funding. |
