OREGON'S WASHINGTON COUNTY:  A HUB OF INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGY

Portland, OR -- Today Congressman David Wu and three Washington County high-tech businesses announced recent federal research and procurement awards. The awards from the federal government highlight Washington County's growing reputation as a hub of innovative technology.

"Today we acknowledge three businesses of Oregon's Washington County. These businesses have and will continue to grow the local economy with the financial assistance of the federal government," stated Congressman Wu. "It is the work of these individuals, their staffs, and the partnership with the federal government that create high quality jobs for Oregonians."

With the support of Congressman Wu, HemCon Inc., InSport International Inc. and iSense Development Corporation have all caught the attention of the United States Department of Defense.  Each company is providing the Department of Defense with research and products that help save lives or improve the comfort, safety and effectiveness of our service members in the battlefield.

Specifically, Congressman Wu announced $5 million for the U.S. Army to purchase HemCon's life-saving bandage to stop battlefield bleeding; $1 million from the U.S. Army for iSense to develop life-saving technology to detect internal bleeding; and $2 million for the U.S. Marine Corps to purchase high-tech clothing from InSport.

"I would like to thank Congressmen Wu, Senators Smith and Wyden and the other members of the Oregon congressional contingent for their continued support of HemCon and the important work we do on behalf of all men and women in the armed services. I believe that we represent the very best example of collaboration between the military and industry to develop new technologies that can saves lives in the battlefield. We are very pleased to have received the award as one of the US Army’s Greatest Inventions in June 2005, the only medical device so recognized. We are grateful for the continued funding we receive as it will allow to provide additional products to both the military and civilian markets and continue our ability to grow jobs here in Oregon. We are honored to work with Congressmen Wu and his staff in his efforts to support and grow the medical technology sector in the Portland metropolitan region."
--John Morgan, president & CEO, HemCon, Inc.

"We are pleased and excited to have validation from the federal government evidenced by an investment into a life-saving technology that eventually will provide medical professionals with the much needed early detection of severe blood loss or internal bleeding, particularly in battlefield or trauma-center locations."
--Dick Sass, president & CEO, iSense Development Corporation

“All of us at InSport are honored to provide the most technologically advanced high performance base layer garments to brave U.S. men and women in combat and to have the support of the Oregon delegation in doing so. These appropriations evidence Washington County’s place at the hub of the health and high tech industries.”
--Eric Merk, executive vice president, InSport International Inc.
