WU, HOUSE EDUCATION DEMOCRATS UNITE AGAINST REPUBLICAN RAID ON STUDENT AID

Washington, DC-- Congressman David Wu, along with every Democratic member of the U.S. House Education Committee, fought for a stronger America today by opposing a Republican bill that cuts approximately $15 billion from federal student aid programs. This bill represents the largest cut in the federal student aid programs to date.

Congressman Wu challenged the Republican proposal during debate and released the statement below:

"We would not be here today if it weren't for the Bush administration's misplaced priorities and irresponsible deficit-financed tax cuts.

"Slashing the budget at the expense of students defies common sense and jeopardizes access to higher education.

"American students and families are already struggling to pay for college and future cuts will only price more students out of a college education. Savings found through a bipartisan effort earlier this year should instead be reinvested into students to boost Pell grants and to make college loans more accessible.

"Today's committee action confirms this administration is not acting in the best interest of Americans or our economic future. A stronger America starts at home, and one of the best investments we can make as a nation is in education."
