CONGRESSMAN DAVID WU SUPPORTS OREGON'S FISHERMAN'S EFFORTS TO PROTECT AND REINVIGORATE COASTAL ECONOMY

"Fish mean business. It's that simple." says Wu

Washington, DC -- Congressman David Wu released the following statement in support of today's fishermen's rally, sponsored by several sport and commercial fishing organizations.

"Today, fishermen in Oregon are speaking out to protect and reinvigorate our coastal economy.  Fish mean business.  It is that simple.

"This year, the Columbia River closed to Spring Chinook angling on May 6th because fish returns were 44% lower than expected.  Every day these fisheries are closed means fewer dollars for our local economy.

"Salmon have been a part of the Northwest fabric for many centuries and continue to be an important symbol of the Northwest. Restoration of healthy salmon runs is a priority for our region. Unfortunately, this Administration seems content to simply redefine the problem away."

Today's rally was organized by the Northwest Steelheaders, of which Congressman Wu is a member, Salmon for All, Save our Wild Salmon, Northwest Sportfishing Industry Association, Trout Unlimited, and the Pacific Coast Federation of Fishermen's Associations.  Congressman Wu commends these organizations and their members, many of whom he has seen on the river for over twenty years, for speaking out on this important issue.
