OREGON AIR BASE TO RETAIN FULL AIR DEFENSE CAPABILITY

BRAC Commission recognizes PDX Air Station role in keeping the Pacific Northwest secure

Portland, OR--Congressman David Wu released the statement below following the Base Realignment and Closure Commission's vote against the Secretary of Defense's recommendation to realign Oregon's National Guard Air Station at Portland International Airport.

"Today's decision is in the best interest of our homeland and of all Oregonians.

"Just as the Pacific Northwest is facing substantial population growth in the coming years and is home to major dams, power transmission facilities, high tech and bio tech companies, a decision to reduce the region's air defense capability would have defied common sense and put at risk the security of the entire region.

"I applaud our governor, Oregon National Guard officials and my delegation colleagues for ensuring Oregon maintains a level of defense that is consistent with our homeland security mission and meets the needs of our nation and the State of Oregon."
