CONGRESSMAN DAVID WU EXTENDS INVITATION TO TAIWAN PRESIDENT CHEN

Portland, OR--Today Congressman David extended an invitation to Taiwan President Chen Shui-bian to meet with him in either Portland or Washington, DC, during the President’s transit of the United States.

“The goal of a visit by President Chen is the continuation of the warm and long friendship that exists between Oregon and Taiwan,” said Congressman David Wu. “Oregon and Taiwan have had a mutually beneficial relationship in both the areas of business and cultural exchange.”

Taiwan is Oregon’s sixth largest export market. Exports to Taiwan have grown from $451.3 million in 2001 to $602 million in 2003. The top three exports to Taiwan are electrical machinery at 52.63 %, cereals at 15.56% and machinery at 12.15%.

Oregon has two sister city relationships with Taiwan, Hsinchu and Beaverton and Kaohsiung and Portland. The sister city program allows cultural exchanges between governments, organizations and citizens of both cities.

“A visit to Oregon would allow President Chen to see first hand some of our world class operations in the areas of sustainable industries, agriculture and high tech,” said Congressman David Wu.

President Chen will be in transit through the United States on September 3, 2004.
