WU BRINGS SNEAK PREVIEW OF "THE GUARDIAN" TO OREGON COAST GUARD MEMBERS

WASHINGTON, DC -- Last week, Congressman David Wu heard about "The Guardian," a movie that portrays the intense training and dangerous mission of U.S. Coast Guard rescue swimmers. Congressman Wu thought that bringing a sneak preview of "The Guardian" to Oregon would be a great way to thank Coast Guard members for their service to the country.

"I want to thank our Coast Guard men and women for their hard work and service. I appreciate the commitment they bring to their job and also to the community," said Congressman Wu.

Congressman Wu worked with Walt Disney Company and Buena Vista Pictures Distribution, Inc. to bring the sneak preview to Astoria, Oregon. The movie will be shown at Astoria's Gateway Cinema this Saturday, September 16, two weeks ahead of the official release. All Coast Guard members, their families and friends are invited to attend.

The Northwest corner of Oregon is home to the U.S. Coast Guard Group/ Air Station at the Astoria Regional Airport in Warrenton, Oregon. Their mission includes search and rescue, law enforcement, aids to navigation support, and environmental protection.

There is a second Coast Guard station at the mouth of the Columbia River. U.S. Coast Guard Station Cape Disappointment is the largest Coast Guard search and rescue station on the Northwest Coast.

According to the U.S. Coast Guard, the mouth of the Columbia River is regarded as on of the most treacherous river bars in the world. Because of the large number of shipwrecks near the river entrance it is often called “The Graveyard of the Pacific.” During winter storms, wind-driven ocean swells often reach a height of 20-30 feet at the entrance of the bar. With the combination of strong outgoing tides and large incoming swells, large surf conditions can exist in and around the bar entrance.
