CONGRESSMAN WU ACTS TO RESTORE FUNDING FOR THE CORPORATION FOR PUBLIC BROADCASTING

Washington, D.C.--Today, Congressman David Wu voted to restore $100 million in federal funds to the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB).

"The proposed cuts to public broadcasting would be devastating to local public television and radio stations around the U.S." said Congressman Wu.  "These stations depend on federal support to provide the quality cultural and educational programming that Americans have come to know and love."

The original version of the Labor, Health and Human Services (HHS) and Education Appropriations bill cut funding for CPB’s base accounts by $100 million – a 25% cut from FY05 funding levels.  Over 1,000 local public broadcasting stations would be hit by this cut nationwide.  During floor debate today, Representatives David Obey (D-WI7), Nita Lowey (D-NY18), and Jim Leach (R-IA2) offered an amendment to the Labor, HHS and Education Appropriations Act that will restore $100 million to CPB’s budget after it was cut during committee deliberations.  This amendment passed by a vote of 284 to 140.

"Passage of this amendment will help keep educational, unbiased programming on the air," said Wu.
