Astoria job training center to receive $450,291 from the Department of Labor for construction purposes

Washington, D.C. - Today, Congressman David Wu announced the Tongue Point Job Corps Center in Astoria, Oregon has been awarded a federal Department of Labor grant totaling $450,291 for construction of a new dining hall building which will house the culinary arts program.

"The Tongue Point Jobs Corps Center has been providing high-quality vocational training for over 40 years.  It is the only center in the country that offers seamanship training in the specialty area of U.S. Coast Guard certified maritime transportation," said Congressman Wu.  "I am very pleased to announce that federal dollars will improve Tongue Point's program offerings."

The Tongue Point Job Corps Center provides vocational and secondary education to 500 Workforce Investment Act youth and young adults ages 16 to 24.  The Center will use the $450,291 grant for the architectural design and construction administration of a new 16,200-maximum gross square foot cafeteria and culinary arts building.   The new building will seat about 350 people at a time and will overlook the Columbia River and Mott Basin adjacent to the Marine Environment Research and Training Station.

"We are badly in need of dining facilities, using the same kitchen and space from the original Navy Base built in 1938," said Director Nancy Pyburn.   "The addition of a new dining facility and culinary arts vocational area will add life to our very old, but well maintained, campus."

The grant was awarded under the Employment and Training Administration of the United States Department of Labor.
