Washington, DC-- Today Congressman David Wu endorsed the findings of two Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) public opinion surveys on the Newberg-Dundee Highway Bypass project.
"These surveys reinforce what we already know. Residents of Newberg and Dundee are fed up with traffic congestion on Highway 99W and are committed to finding a solution," said Congressman David Wu. "I strongly support construction of the Newberg-Dundee Bypass because it will improve public safety, create jobs, and ease the grinding traffic congestion that has become a daily hardship."
ODOT commissioned Davis, Hibbitts & Midghall, Inc. to assess opinions related to the Newberg-Dundee Highway Bypass project. Some key findings from the report included the fact that seventy-five percent of people in the project area are willing to pay something extra to build the bypass. Fully 95% of respondents said that congestion on 99W is serious.
Congressman Wu recently secured $6.343 million for the Newberg-Dundee project in the House passed Transportation bill, H.R. 3550. This amount is in addition to the $1.275 million that Congressman Wu has secured for this project in past years.
Highway 99W runs directly through the cites of Newberg and Dundee. The Newberg-Dundee Bypass would create a 10-mile bypass of Highway 99W around the two cites, connecting an essential commerce corridor and restoring safer streets to their core communities.
"These survey results send a clear signal: build the Newberg-Dundee Bypass," commented Congressman David Wu. "I strongly encourage ODOT to do all they can to expedite this important project."
