CONGRESSMAN WU APPLAUDS COMMITTEE ACTION ON FORT CLATSOP EXPANSION AND RENAMING

Washington DC-- Today Congressman David Wu applauded the House Resources Committee, on its passage of the Lewis and Clark National Historic Park Designation Act of 2004 (H.R.3819).

"With the Lewis and Clark Bicentennial upon us, the expansion and renaming of Fort Clatsop National Memorial Park is important not only for the historical significance but also for the economic impact it will have on Northern Oregon," said Congressman David Wu.  "Expanding Fort Clatsop will not only improve Clatsop county's economy, but will help accommodate the increasing number of tourists visiting Oregon during the Bicentennial festivities."

The Lewis and Clark National Historical Park Designation Act of 2004 (H.R. 3819), which Rep. Wu introduced with Rep. Brian Baird (WA), will redesignate Fort Clatsop and three additional sites as the Lewis and Clark National Historical Park. The three sites to be added will be Clark's Dismal Nitch (Megler Rest Area), Station Camp, and Fort Canby State Park.

This legislative effort builds upon the success of the Fort Clatsop National Memorial Expansion Act (P.L. 107-221), authored by Congressman Wu, which expanded the boundaries of the Fort Clatsop National Park Memorial from 130 acres to 1,500 acres and evaluated the significance of the three Lewis and Clark sites on the north shore of the Columbia river for potential inclusion into the Fort Clatsop National Memorial. On August 21, 2002 President Bush signed Congressman Wu's legislation into law.
H.R. 3819 will now go to the House of Representatives for a vote.
