CONGRESSMAN WU ANNOUNCES 2005 CONGRESSIONAL ART CONTEST WINNER
Simon Boas of Beaverton High School will have his artwork
displayed at the U.S. Capitol
 
Portland, OR -- Congressman David Wu announced today that Simon Boas, a junior at Beaverton High School, is the winner of the 24th Annual Congressional Art Competition for the First Congressional District of Oregon.  
 
As the winner, Mr. Boas is eligible for a $1,000 scholarship to the Art Institute of Portland, as well as an invitation to the ribbon-cutting ceremony at the U.S. Capitol, where his artwork will be displayed for one year.  Mr. Boas also receives three round-trip airline tickets, courtesy of Southwest Airlines, to Washington, DC to attend the June 14th ceremony. 
 
The local awards ceremony will be held on Thursday, May 5th, 2005, as part of the First Thursday events at the Art Institute of Portland.  Mr. Boas will be joined by his family and his artwork entitled, Impending, will be on display.  The ceremony is schedule begin at 5:30pm.
 
The Art Institute will also display the artwork of first runner up Cymon Kersch, a senior at Wilson High School, and second runner up, Kathleen Rees, a junior at Beaverton High School.  Ms. Kersch and Ms. Rees will also be in attendance at the awards ceremony this Thursday.
 
The Congressional Art Competition was first launched in 1982.  Since then, thousands of contests have been conducted around the country, involving more than 650,000 high school students.  Each Member of Congress sponsors a local art competition in their Congressional District and selects one winning entry.  The competition provides students a unique opportunity to showcase their artistic talent at the United States Capitol in Washington, D.C.
