CONGRESSMAN WU ANNOUNCES LEGISLATION TO PROVIDE NATIONAL GUARD AND RESERVIST TUITION AT STATE SCHOOLS

Portland, OR  --  Today Congressman David Wu announced his new legislation (The National Guard And Reservists Education Benefits Act) that would provide tuition for National Guard and Military Reservists who attend a state school or university in their home state. Portland State University President Dan Bernstine and Brigadier General Raymond C. Byrne, head of the Oregon National Guard accompanied Congressman Wu.

"The National Guard members and the Military Reservists remind us what is right with America. Their courage and commitment are inspiring," said Congressman David Wu. " While America's finest are defending our country, the least America can do is to provide them with access to a first class education. My legislation will make that access possible."

The National Guard and Reservists Education Benefits Act calls for the establishment of a national program, administered by the Department of Education, to distribute funding to pay tuition for national guard members and military reservists who attend a state institution of higher education in their home state.

"While we ask the National Guard and Military Reservists to serve their country and endure the hardships of long deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan, the very least a grateful nation should do is to provide them with access to higher education."
