CONGRESSMAN WU FIGHTS FOR TAX FAIRNESS

Washington, DC  --  Congressman David Wu applauded yesterday's full House passage of a bill to make permanent the marriage tax repeal signed into law by President Bush three years ago. The bill, H.R. 4181 (The Permanent Extension of the Marriage Penalty Bill) passed the House by a vote of 323-95.

"I am proud to vote for this legislation eliminating the marriage tax which has been one of the most unfair provisions of the tax code," said Congressman Wu. "Yesterday's vote brings us one step closer to ensuring the marriage penalty never returns to the tax code and never again unfairly taxes married couples with almost $1,400 in extra taxes."

In 2001, Congress enacted a repeal of the marriage penalty, but the law included a provision that phased out the tax relief after ten years.  H.R. 4181 would make the marriage penalty tax relief permanent, and directly benefit over 42 million married couples who currently pay on average $1,400 extra per year in taxes due to their marital status.

Congressman Wu has steadfastly supported repealing the marriage penalty. On March 29, 2001, Wu voted in support of H.R. 6, the Marriage Penalty and Family Tax Relief Act, and he supported H.R. 4019, which would permanently the repeal this tax penalty on June 13, 2002.

"My vote yesterday is a continuation of my past efforts for fairness in our tax code."
