Congressman Wu Announces 25th Annual Congressional Art Competition

Washington, DC - Congressman David Wu announced today that he is soliciting entries for the 25th Annual Congressional Art Competition for high school students.  This competition provides students a unique opportunity to showcase their artistic talent at the United States Capitol in Washington, D.C.  The winning student will be eligible for a $1,000 scholarship to the Art Institute of Portland, as well as an invitation to the ribbon-cutting ceremony at the U.S. Capitol, where the art will be displayed.

The Congressional Art Competition was first launched in 1982.  Since then, thousands of contests have been conducted around the country, involving more than 650,000 high school students.  Each member of Congress sponsors a local art competition in their Congressional District and selects one winning entry.  The winning piece of art from each district is displayed in the Capitol for one year.

The competition begins immediately, and all entries must be submitted no later than Friday, April 21st, 2006.  Entrants must be high school students from the First Congressional District of Oregon.  Letters soliciting artwork were sent to all high schools in the District this month.  To participate, each student must fill out an application and follow guidelines set by the U. S. House of Representatives.

The winner will be announced on May 4th, 2006, at the First Thursday event at the Art Institute of Portland.  The winning student will receive a $1,000 scholarship to the Art Institute of Portland, if they choose to enroll in the fall, in addition to an invitation to attend a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new display in the U.S. Capitol Building on June 28th, 2006 and three round-trip airline tickets to Washington, DC courtesy of Southwest Airlines.

Eligible entries should be delivered to Congressman David Wu's district office at: 620 SW Main St., Suite 606 Portland, OR 97205.  For more information or to receive competition guidelines and an application, contact Ajah Maloney in Congressman Wu's office at 503-326-2901 or visit: http://www.house.gov/wu/for_students.htm.
