CONGRESSMAN DAVID WU RELEASES ECONOMIC GROWTH PLAN FOR OREGON

Wu Plan stresses unemployment extension, small business investment, building roads & bridges, college affordability

Washington, DC-- Congressman David Wu today released a comprehensive plan to create new jobs and ensure the long-term prosperity of Oregon's economy.  The document represents both Wu's past work in Congress to improve Oregon's economy and his priorities for future efforts.

"We all need to work together to grow our economy and create new high paying jobs," said Congressman David Wu.  "This plan is a work in progress, but I want to lay out my priorities, continue to solicit feedback from Oregonians, and work as hard as I can to improve our economy."

Congressman Wu has circulated the plan amongst Oregon business and community leaders and held a roundtable discussion with these leaders to solicit feedback on the plan last November.

Below are some highlights of Wu's Economic Plan.
  • Building Roads, Bridges and Critical Infrastructure
To create immediate high paying jobs, Congressman Wu supports investing more federal dollars in critical transportation and infrastructure projects.  Specifically, he is seeking funding for improvements to Highways 26 & 217, to build the Newberg Dundee Bypass on Highway 99W, to continue improvements to the Portland to Astoria Railroad, and to construct the Washington County Commuter Rail.

  • Tax Incentives for Small Business
Small businesses provide most of the jobs on which Oregon families depend.  Congressman Wu supports giving small businesses incentives to invest, expand, and create new jobs.  He is the sponsor of legislation (H.R. 2081) to cut capital gains taxes on new small business investments that are held for at least five years.

  • Extending Unemployment Benefits
Congressman Wu supports providing a six-month extension of long-term unemployment benefits.  Such an extension will help an estimated 34,000 Oregonians who risk losing homes, cars, or the ability to pay tuition for their children or vital health care for their family.

  • Making College More Affordable
Economic success begins with a college degree.  Congressman Wu has sponsored six bills to make college more affordable including increasing federal student aid, allowing student loan refinancing, making student loan interest fully tax deductible, and supporting our community colleges.

  • High-Tech Research and Technology
To fuel our future economic prosperity, Congressman Wu believes we need to invest in long-term science and technology research.  He has secured an amendment to bring more nanotechnology research to Oregon and is fighting for more federal research funding for Oregon's colleges and universities.
