TSUNAMI: IS THE U.S. PREPARED?

CONGRESSMAN DAVID WU PARTICIPATES IN TSUNAMI HEARING WITH OREGON EXPERT

Washington, DC-- Today Congressman David Wu applauded the efforts of Oregon communities in their efforts to have the best early warning and evacuation plan in place in the event of a tsunami. Congressman Wu recognized the efforts of Cannon Beach Oregon, a community that has been nationally recognized as Tsunami Ready, by the National Weather Service. Congressman Wu's remarks took place at the House Science Committee's hearing entitled Tsunamis: Is the U.S. Prepared?

"The damage and devastation that occurred from the recent Tsunami was unimaginable," said Congressman David Wu. "This tragedy has reminded us of the need to have the best early warning and evacuation plan in place. Cannon Beach, in my district is nationally recognized for its planning work to keep its citizens as safe as possible in the event of a natural disaster. In addition I'd like to commend the efforts of businesses and organizations like Intel, Nike and Mercy Corps for their generous donations and relief efforts in Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India and Thailand."

Today's hearing was held to help get a better understanding of the causes of tsunamis, the risks they may pose to the U.S. and to the rest of the world, and how the U.S. should prepare for them.

To protect the U.S., the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) operates two tsunami warning centers, one in Alaska and one in Hawaii.  The Hawaiian center dates back to 1948, and the entire current warning system, which includes ocean buoys, has been in place since 2001.  In response to this recent disaster, on January 14, 2005, the Administration announced an interagency plan to increase U.S. risk assessment, detection, warning and disaster planning for tsunamis.  The plan would cost $37.5 million over two fiscal years.

Mr. Jay Wilson, Coordinator of Earthquake and Tsunami Programs, Plans and Training Section, Oregon Emergency Management Office testified at today's hearing about Oregon's tsunamis preparedness.
