OREGON'S DEATH WITH DIGNITY ACT STANDS

Washington, DC-- Today the United States Supreme Court upheld Oregon's Death with Dignity Act. The ruling concludes Oregon's long fight against the Bush Administration which first challenged the law in 2001.

"The United States Supreme Court ruled in support of each and every Oregonian and their fundamental right to choose how they leave this world," commented Congressman Wu. "Today we recognize the American value of self-determination."

In 1994 and 1997, Oregonians voiced their support for the Death with Dignity Act through the democratic process. In 2001, then Attorney General John Ashcroft asserted that the United States Justice Department would take action against Oregon doctors who carried out the law. In response, the state of Oregon sued to protect the law. The Supreme Court heard arguments on October 5, 2005.
