CONGRESSMAN WU ANNOUNCES FEDERAL GRANTS FOR KNAPPA-SVENSEN-BURNSIDE RURAL FIRE PROTECTION DISTRICT

Rural Fire Protection District to receive $32,373 from Homeland Security Dept. for firefighting operations and safety programs

Washington, DC -- Congressman David Wu, today, announced that the Knappa-Svensen-Burnside Rural Fire Protection District has been awarded a federal Department of Homeland Security grant totaling $32,373.  The federal dollars will be used for fire operations and firefighter safety programs.

"Oregon's rural firefighters must be appropriately prepared and equipped for the larger geographic area they serve," said Congressman David Wu.  "I am pleased to announce that once again federal grants will support those who dedicate their lives to protecting others."
The Fire District will use its $32,373 grant to purchase a Breathing Air Compressor/Fill Station and new Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus air bottles, equipment firefighters need when working in areas where the air is too hazardous to breathe.  Previously, fire district staff had to drive approximately 20 miles to refill spent bottles.  This situation was very problematic at such times when it required at least an hour's time before the bottles would be refilled and returned to the location of the fire.

"Let me express our gratitude for the grant made possible by Congress," said Fire Chief Paul Olheiser. "This will enable the Fire District to purchase equipment items that would not have been possible without the federal funding."

The grant was awarded under the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program by the United States Fire Administration, a division of the United States Department of Homeland Security.
