Legislation Would Protect Volunteer Pilots from Liability

April 26, 2004

Volunteer pilots provide an invaluable service to communities throughout America.  They donate their time to provide free air transportation for folks who must travel long distances to seek medical attention and cannot afford commercial travel.  They are also a critical part of our organ donation system, flying to all parts of the country at a moment's notice to deliver organs to waiting transplant recipients.

Skyrocketing insurance costs that volunteer organizations must carry are threatening to put these groups out of business, leaving patients no alternative to getting the care they need.  Because many of these organizations survive on donations, they can no longer afford the cost of this insurance.

To help these organizations survive, I have cosponsored the Volunteer Pilot Organization Protection Act, H.R. 1084.  This bill will protect pilots, volunteers, and their staff from liability in case of a catastrophic accident.

Many Americans owe an immeasurable debt to these volunteers.   We must do all we can to make sure volunteer pilots are able to continue to help those in need.
