UN Treaty Could Violate American Values

January 30, 2004

The American family forms the social, economic, and moral backbone of our country.  We must promote pro-family laws that uphold and strengthen this sacred institution.

Although intended for the good of children, the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (CROC) is a legally binding international treaty that gives rights to children that, if interpreted wrongly, could violate traditional American values.  For example, Article XIII guarantees children's freedom to seek, receive, and impart information through any media of their choice without parental supervision.  As we seek to protect young people from Internet pornography, such a law could have frightening consequences.  Article XXIV also states that no child should be deprived of his or her right to access health care services, which could include the right to an abortion.  If ratified by the United States, CROC could be treated in the courts as part of American law, allowing judges and bureaucrats too much leeway to interpret its meaning in ways that could threaten the family.

As a father, husband, and Christian, I strongly support the preservation of the family.  We must protect our children by upholding traditional American values that reinforce the role of parents.
