Transportation Infrastructure Needs Continuing Investment

October 16, 2003

The Chickamauga Lock allows for affordable and convenient transport of goods on the Tennessee River.  Replacing the deteriorating structure with a new, larger lock is critical for the future of East Tennessee.  The lock spurs our region's economy and decreases the need for truck transport on already congested highways.  I will continue working to make sure Congress provides adequate funding for this project to move forward.

Additional funding for other transportation infrastructure also drives economic vitality and creates more job opportunities in Tennessee.  Congress is committed to the constant improvement needed on our highways, bridges, and roads.  The Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century (TEA-21) established a trust fund that collects taxes from gas sales for the purpose of better roads.  We must continue to invest in a transportation system the public relies on daily.

There is also a lack of air service at Chattanooga's airport.  I am a frequent flyer and understand this problem well.  Although I cannot directly affect the airlines' business decisions, I am weighing in on the need to increase jet service to our city.  I recently lobbied U.S. Airways to reinstate some regional jets that have been replaced by commuters.  As a member of the House Appropriations Committee, which has discretionary powers on transportation spending, I will continue to work with my colleagues to secure the level of funding necessary to meet the needs of the transportation system, and I will support plans to enhance travel service in East Tennessee.
