Medicare Rx Drug Act Places Moratorium On Therapy Cap

August 12, 2003

Services like physical, occupational or speech-language therapy are incredibly important to so many Medicare beneficiaries.  I appreciate how the cap on occupational therapy services will affect seniors and individuals with disabilities.

I have worked in the past to eliminate this cap, first by cosponsoring legislation and by working closely with Chairman Thomas on Medicare refinement legislation.  On June 27th, the House passed the Medicare Prescription Drug and Modernization Act of 2003, which would put a one year moratorium on the $1,500 therapy cap that went into effect on July 1.  I have also cosponsored H.R. 1125, to eliminate this cap once and for all.  An arbitrary cap on therapy services targets the sickest Medicare patients who need it the most and must be eliminated.

I will continue this fight to take care of the long-term needs of our seniors by strongly advocating for a solution to this problem.
