In the Wake of the Terrorist Attacks, the Power of Prayer is More Important Than Ever.

October 29, 2001

Millions of Americans are still searching for answers in the wake of the shocking attacks in New York and Washington D.C. We have only just begun the struggle to understand what would lead these terrorists to commit such sinister acts of violence. My thoughts and prayers go out to all of the victims and their families during this difficult and sad time.

Too many American children are struggling with fear and uncertainty as a result of these recent incidents. It is essential that children feel the love of their parents, the presence of friends and the embrace of a compassionate and loving God. I have always believed that God belongs in our schools. Voluntary prayer or lessons from the Bible led by students without coercion is basic to our existence as a nation.

I was an original cosponsor of a Constitutional amendment "to secure the people's right to acknowledge God according to the dictates of conscience, the people's right to pray and to recognize their religious beliefs, heritage, or traditions on public property, including schools." Unfortunately, this bill did not achieve the two-thirds majority necessary for passage.

It is a shame that it took such a tragedy to realize the importance of God in our lives and our country. I will continue supporting efforts to allow students to engage in voluntary prayer and Bible study.
