Tax Code Needs Complete Overhaul

August 29, 2003

Since 1986, the tax code has been modified literally thousands of times and is now so complicated that college graduates cannot do their own taxes.  Congress needs to simplify the current tax system and reduce the burden on taxpayers.  I strongly believe it is time for an overhaul of the current tax code.

Throughout my career in Congress, I have cosponsored and voted for bills that will terminate our complex tax code and establish a commission to study and suggest a new, straightforward set of tax laws.  This issue is so important, it deserves the full debate of all the citizens of our country.  The specifics of all the different proposals, including the fair tax, need careful study.

There is a tremendous need for serious tax reform in this country, including a fairer tax code.  I will continue to advocate eliminating our current code and replacing it with one that works for the people, not against them.
