A Clear Message to Our Youth:  Steroid Abuse Is Wrong

April 12, 2004

Steroid abuse is a serious issue.  Over the past few years, there has been a significant rise in steroid abuse by adolescents.

It's important that adolescents and young adults realize the dangers of illegal steroid use.  Not only do steroids pose dangerous health risks when used improperly, but using steroids gives athletes a false sense of accomplishment.  I agree with what President Bush said in his State of the Union message:  "The use of performance-enhancing drugs like steroids in baseball, football, and other sports is dangerous, and it sends the wrong message -- that there are shortcuts to accomplishment, and that performance is more important than character."  We need to send a clear message to our youth:  steroid abuse is wrong.
