Members of Congress Pay Full Social Security Taxes

January 11, 2005

There is a lot of misinformation about benefits for Members of Congress being circulated over the Internet and on some talk radio shows.

All Members of Congress pay the full amount of social security taxes that every other citizen pays.  The retirement system for Members of Congress requires that they serve five full years before being vested.  Once vested, they receive 1.7 % of their salaries multiplied by the number of years served once they reach retirement age.  This is very similar to state and local government pensions.  Members of Congress may choose from an assortment of standard health care plans included in the Federal Employee Health Benefit Plan shared by all federal employees.  Members must pay a share of the cost of the health care as do all federal employees.

The general public is not served well by the continual misrepresentation of benefits for public servants.  All of these facts are a matter of public record. My financial disclosure statement, which is filed every May according to Federal law, is also available to the public.
