Legislation Will Close Social Security Loopholes

March 8, 2004

Congress has the obligation to protect Social Security from fraud and abuse for the millions of retirees and disabled Americans who rely on it.  Up until now, loopholes and light penalties for those who exploit Social Security have cost the Social Security Trust Fund millions of dollars.

The Social Security Protection Act of 2003 has passed the House and Senate with strong bipartisan support and will soon go before the President to be signed into law.  This bill takes great strides to eliminate flaws that in the past have left Social Security vulnerable to exploitation and fraud.  So many Americans depend on Social Security that we must work to preserve, protect, and strengthen it.
