Wamp Supports Social Security Benefits Tax Relief

September 26, 2000

To ease the tremendous tax burden on elderly Americans receiving Social Security, Congressman Zach Wamp supported H.R. 4865, The Social Security Benefits Tax Relief Act.

"The Social Security system in the early 1980s was on a collision course towards disaster. In order to save the program, the federal government imposed a tax on older workers and retirees. As if that weren't enough, the Clinton/Gore Administration in 1993 slapped yet another tax on Social Security recipients to help reduce the 255 billion-dollar budget deficit. Not only is this wrong, but enough is enough!"

"I supported the Social Security Benefits Tax Relief Act on July 27th because it was simply the right thing to do. Taxing Social Security benefits imposes financial hardships on older workers and retirees. Our seniors depend on this income, and it is simply not fair to burden them with more taxes. H.R. 4865 repeals the 1993 tax, and allows seniors to keep more of their retirement income."
