Sound Science Needed To Identify Causes Of Global Warming

April 7, 2004

A growing body of scientific data indicates that a warming trend in the earth's climate is taking place on a global scale.  But it is unclear whether this warming is caused by naturally occurring, long-period phenomena, or human behavior.

President Bush has initiated a Climate Change Research Initiative to provide guidance to policymakers on important scientific questions regarding the global warming trend in the earth's climate.  The goal is to make national policy decisions based on sound science so that we can identify and solve any problems.

That is why I secured $750,000 this year for the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga's Sim Center to develop supercomputing tools and regional climate databases necessary to address the Climate Change Initiative.  I am seeking another $750,000 in the coming year to continue this exciting work.  These state-of-the-art computing resources should improve our ability to predict and analyze climate change while enhancing the research and technology in the Tennessee Valley and our university.
