Wamp Supports the Guard and Reserve Readiness Retention Act

July 6, 2005

One of the most important responsibilities I have as a Member of the United States Congress is to ensure adequate support for and appreciation of our nation's Armed Servicemen. Freedom and responsibility are intertwined.  The most significant demonstration of this responsibility for others has been shown by the bravery, courage and sacrifice of the men and women in uniform.

Since the end of the Cold War, the role of reservist and National Guard units has changed so that they are used increasingly in active duty roles.  Reservist and National Guardsmen benefits should be brought more in line with active duty service to reflect these increasing responsibilities.

For this reason, I am a cosponsor of The Guard and Reserve Readiness Retention Act, H.R. 558, which would make all reservist and National Guardsmen eligible to enroll in the TRICARE program regardless of whether they have been called into active duty.  It is an important step in honoring the service and sacrifice reservists and National Guardsmen who serve our nation so patriotically.
