Constitutional Amendment Would Protect Religious Liberty

July 22, 2005

The government should encourage, not undermine the role of religion and faith in this country.  I believe strongly our country was founded on the principle of freedom of religion, not freedom from religion.  The purpose of the First Amendment was to rule out the establishment of a particular religion and to prohibit government from discriminating against one religion by favoring another.  It was never intended to mandate that government ban religious expressions or deny the existence of God.

The Supreme Court's recent rulings on the public display of the Ten Commandments were troubling.  We must continue to protect fundamental religious liberties that are so important to the spiritual health of this nation.  That is why I am an original cosponsor of the Religious Freedom Amendment, H.J.Res. 57.  This proposes a Constitutional amendment that would protect states' rights to display the Ten Commandments, use "God" in the Pledge of Allegiance, and keep "In God we Trust" in our national motto.

We must continue to protect fundamental religious liberties that are so important to the spiritual health of this nation.  Our society cannot and will not survive if we continue down this path.
