Legislation Will Help Reform United Nations

June 17, 2005

The United Nations Reform Act, which passed the House of Representatives today, will reform the global association and help to restore its international image by making it more focused and accountable.

The UN has evolved from a once noble institution into a body besieged by conflicting interests and corruption.  However, with major reform and accountability, the UN can still be an organization of international goodwill and humanitarian relief.

In addition, the recent scandals such as the one involving the Oil-for-Food program have exposed deep corruption within the UN.  I am hopeful the UN can turn its act around, but if it cannot, it will become obsolete.  This legislation will help to reverse its current course.
