We Must Provide For Our Troops In Iraq

January 18, 2005

My heart goes out to the families and friends of the servicemen and women in Iraq, Afghanistan, and around the world.  I will do everything in my power to provide them with the equipment and funding to keep them safe and support their mission.

The conditions and needs of our military are constantly changing in Iraq, and I am working to keep abreast of developments as they occur.  I am planning to travel to Iraq with Armed Services Committee Chairman Duncan Hunter so that I can gain firsthand knowledge of what those needs are.

I am particularly troubled by reports of equipment shortages.  Questions that members of the 278th Armored Cavalry Regiment of the Tennessee Army National Guard recently posed to Secretary Rumsfeld about armor for their Humvees bring the problem close to home.  I have contacted Secretary Rumsfeld about this issue.  As a member of the House Appropriations Committee, which funds our military, I look forward to working with him to improve the way that necessary funding and equipment are available for the troops.

I will continue to stand by our service men and women.  They are working non-stop for our freedom and national security and we must do all that we can to provide for their equipment needs.
