Policies Are Meant To Protect Troops

January 27, 2005

As a nation, we ask a lot of our servicemen and women.  We must be there for them also.  They are working non-stop for our freedom and national security and we should be grateful for their sacrifices and that of their families.

According to both the U.S. Postal Service and the Department of Defense, folks can send their loved ones Bibles for their personal use.  However, they cannot send multiple copies of the Bible or other bulk religious material to the Middle East. All packages sent to troops overseas must be sent to a specific person.  This policy is necessary because of terrorism.  Without a specific soldier, sailor, airman or marine's name on a package, it would be much more likely to contain an explosive device.

The men and women of our armed services have the right to practice their religious beliefs.  I will fight to protect that right, while supporting common-sense security measures.
