The Press Must Be Held Accountable For Irresonsible Reporting

August 2, 2006
While the freedom of the press is a cornerstone of our democracy, we must strike a balance to protect our national security from irresponsible reporting.  One story in the New York Times about our tracking of terrorist financing ruined years of careful work in fighting international terrorism.  This is unacceptable.  In response to this story, I was one of 71 Members of Congress to sign a letter to Speaker Dennis Hastert requesting that he rescind the congressional press credentials of the New York Times.

In addition, the House of Representatives recently passed a resolution that denounced the leaks of classified information to the media, and asks for cooperation from the media not to damage vital national security interests in their reporting.  Members of the press must be more responsible citizens and should work to protect vital national security interests.
