No Child Left Behind, A First Step

May 4, 2005

Congress has increased funding for primary, secondary and higher education every year I have served in the House, and we need to continue to make every effort to adequately fund public education at all levels.  But we must realize that simply spending more money alone will not bring about the changes in education we need.  Distribution of federal dollars for mainstream and special needs children should be the accountability and academic standards set by the states.

The No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) is a good first step toward achieving this goal.  Our schools still need help, which is why Congress must stay on top of the implementation of NCLB in order for it to work effectively.  This task is a challenge, but it demonstrates a clear commitment to excellence.  States have the option to apply for federal funding by submitting a plan to the Secretary of Education to teach their students.  Applying for federal dollars under NCLB is an option for states, not a mandate, and receipt of that money is based on meeting a set of conditions that states choose to accept.

I remain committed to improving the important foundation this legislation has laid for the future of education in our country.  Our children are the most valuable resource we have. Each and every child deserves to look with hope to the future ahead of them.
