Wamp Praises Service of Mercy Ship

June 22, 2005

The recent story in Parade Magazine about the service of the U.S.N.S. Mercy in the tsunami disaster relief is a good example of America's compassionate leadership around the globe.  The U.S.N.S Mercy helped to reduce the loss of life resulting from that natural disaster.  Their involvement also improved our national standing in Southeast Asia.

Because this disaster mostly affected coastal towns and cities, the U.S.N.S. Mercy was uniquely able to assist with the recovery.  President Bush's decision to send the U.S.N.S. Mercy around the world for this mission illustrated America's dedication to people worldwide.

The servicemen and women, as well as the civilian Project HOPE (Healthcare Opportunities for People Everywhere) volunteers, who participated in this mission, should be commended for their efforts.
