House Budget Bill Promotes Healthy Meal Choices for Students

April 25, 2003

As the founder and Co-Chairman of the Congressional Fitness Caucus, I realize it is critically important that we teach our children the importance of nutrition and exercise so that they will establish a healthy lifestyle early in their development.  This will help in the fight against heart disease, diabetes, stroke, and some types of cancer that are caused by obesity.

During the budget process, I joined many Members of Congress in strongly advocating for child nutrition programs.  Our efforts paid off.  On April 11th the House passed the final budget resolution with my strong support, which did not include a potential $9.4 billion cut to the essential child nutrition programs. This allows The National School Lunch Program, School Breakfast Program and other programs can continue to provide nutritious meals to over 36 million children each school day.

I am working hard through the Congressional Fitness Caucus to raise the issues of obesity and the need for a balanced diet and exercise to the national forefront.  I will continue to support programs that focus on teaching our children the benefits of nutrition and a healthy lifestyle.
