Marriage Should Be Defined As a Union Between a Man and a Woman

October 29, 2002

"The topic of gay marriages is obviously a very controversial issue, but one for me that is fairly straightforward. I am a strong defender of civil rights and equal protection under the law. But marriage in our country should be defined as between one man and one woman."

"This belief has led me to cosponsor H.J.Res. 93, the Federal Marriage Amendment, a Constitutional amendment that defines marriage as between a man and woman. This bill will also help correct any legal disputes as a result of the Defense of Marriage Act, of which I was an original sponsor. This law gives states the authority to not recognize marriage licenses of other states that define marriage differently."

"As a Christian and a believer in the Bible, I strongly believe that marriage between a man and a woman is a sacred institution and the essence of a healthy society. The Federal Marriage Amendment helps protect this belief."
